Summary

The real Florida lies far from the interstates, where there are no dancing mice, bikini-covered beaches, or shopping malls。 If you listen closely, beneath the cries of hungry gulls and the rustle of wind through the palm fronds, you might hear it whisper its secrets。

Lieutenant Evan Caldwell is a man adrift, cut loose from a life he thought he knew。 His wife has lain comatose for months, and the accident that put her there has raised questions that she’s unable to answer。 Now, with his wife in a nearby hospice, Evan has moved to a boat in the quiet Panhandle town of Port St。 Joe, where he works as an investigator with the local sheriff’s office。

Evan’s hopes for peace and solitude are shattered when the current sheriff is found murdered。 Worse, Evan’s put in the position of interim sheriff while he investigates the murder of his former boss。

Evan keeps coming up with more questions than answers; questions about what really happened in the dark privacy of the swamp, and questions about what really happened to his marriage and his wife。

As the answers begin to surface, he discovers secrets as deep and twisted as the roots of the ancient cypress trees that litter the landscape - secrets that no one wants revealed。

A intriguing storyline, the descriptions of the weather, people, and the environment in Florida made me want to put my feet in the water and enjoy。I was intrigued with the Evan trying to get past a terrible accident that engulfed his life。 The murder element was different, I would've liked it finished。 I guess it's sort of a Alfred Hitchcock ending A intriguing storyline, the descriptions of the weather, people, and the environment in Florida made me want to put my feet in the water and enjoy。I was intrigued with the Evan trying to get past a terrible accident that engulfed his life。 The murder element was different, I would've liked it finished。 I guess it's sort of a Alfred Hitchcock ending 。。。more

Interesting read。Good book。 Lots of things to think about as to what is the right thing to do and two sides to everything。

Everyone smokes。 A LOT。 Annoying filler

Good bookI’m too tired to go into an in depth review but I’ll give it a shot。 McKenna is a superb writer。 Her editing team not so much。 In fact, they suck。 Spelling errors galore。 The most annoying issue is a repeat of several paragraphs THREE times。 It ruins the enjoyment of a good book and takes a huge toll on the integrity of an author。 It’s your job to make sure it’s right。 Get yourself decent beta readers and editors。

WelllllAs far as storyline goes, it was not bad。 Characters were believable。 Only thing, it leaves out a lot of info that would pull the reader in, etc, wife possibly, slowly starting to show signs of recovery, then relapsing。 Chief having to pull plug, more actions between deputies。

Good police thrillerThis book kept you guessing until the end。 Lots of twist and turns。 I was a little disappointed in the ending。 The author did not tell you what happens to the killer。

Never read a book by Dawn McKenna that I didn't find exhilarating, and this suspenseful dramatization is one of her very best! I read book three first, for some unknown reason , and now I must read number two, followed by three again。No problem awarding five stars, and more, for this suspense filled episode, as I was hooked immediately, as I have always been with anything Ms。 McKenna is a part of! Too the storylines are so well written, I find myself unable to put the story aside until the final word has been read! Being a retired Chief Deputy of a small Florida Sheriff's Department, makes this story even more intriguing for me! I am definitely looking forward to Book Two, as this one ended a little abruptly, and I want to see what Sheriff Evan might have in store for us!!Definitely recommend this compassionately entertaining story to all readers。 I am a dyed in the wool western folklore enthusiast, but always enjoy following Ms。 McKenna's outstanding stories Florida's Forgotten Coast area。 I am anxiously awaiting the next exciting release of The Forgotten Coast Series, at this time。 Please, read this exceptionally compelling rendition of how a newly appointed Florida County Sheriff, and his associates, pull together in solving the murder of their former long time, and beloved, Sheriff。 Definitely your loss to miss these exciting books, and I must leave you now to read Book Two, of this compassionately entertaining series!!!😃 。。。more

Love this women author。 There were times in the book that you could tell it wasn’t hers。 Didn’t like those lines as well。 One sexist line didn’t sit well。 Evan was introduced in Coastal Florida series。 Book was good and moved fast like a Dawn Lee McKenna book。 Will read the next one as I will read all of Ms McKenna’s books eventually。 Evan whose wife is in a coma from an accident。 Is detective in Port St Joe, Fl。 The sheriff is found shot to death and Evan investigates it and is promoted to Sher Love this women author。 There were times in the book that you could tell it wasn’t hers。 Didn’t like those lines as well。 One sexist line didn’t sit well。 Evan was introduced in Coastal Florida series。 Book was good and moved fast like a Dawn Lee McKenna book。 Will read the next one as I will read all of Ms McKenna’s books eventually。 Evan whose wife is in a coma from an accident。 Is detective in Port St Joe, Fl。 The sheriff is found shot to death and Evan investigates it and is promoted to Sheriff, which he doesn’t want。 。。。more

Decent murder storyWas an okay story。 Surprise ending tho。 My version has Hutchins name misspelled several times。 Sloppy。 But overall a decent murder mystery

Penny Post

I thoroughly enjoyed this book。 The fact that the main character is an outsider to the Sheriff’s office and the counties was part of the draw。 Plates entirely sadistic attitude of peeing Evan’s shoes just added comedy to an other wise sad story of murder and the continued heartbreak in Evan’s situation was not finished in this book。 That separate story has no good ending。I did like Goff and even hard case Vi。 Can’t wait to see how Evan and Plutes get along in the next book。

An excellent read! Looking forward to #2。

Quick, fun readInteresting characters with a mix of competent males and females。 Glimpse into various things reviewed in a murder investigation。 Enjoyable read over the weekend。

I liked the story and would've given it 4 stars had it not been for poor editing。 There really is no excuse for misspelling a major character's name multiple times。 Silly mistakes are rampant in the book, and they throw this grammar nerd right out of the story。 I liked the story and would've given it 4 stars had it not been for poor editing。 There really is no excuse for misspelling a major character's name multiple times。 Silly mistakes are rampant in the book, and they throw this grammar nerd right out of the story。 。。。more

Having read he Forgotten Coast Florida series which I and others I mentioned to was great。 In this new series with Axel Blackwell, it took several times to get into the story。 The beginning was too gritty for one。 When Evan was introduced it became interesting。 Filling in as an intern to solve the case of the murder of the chief。 The secrets came out that was hidden, the outcome of how to play it out where there were winners, or would the victims still lose。 Interesting case to figure out。

Toni

Well written with just the right amount of dry humor。 Keeps you guessing through several twists。 Good local color and believable background。

OutstandingWhen I first started this series I had no idea how much I would enjoy it。 Great mystery, humour and humanity。 I read all three books in a week。 Hope there will be more
